1. UNSUITABLE AND VULNERABLE

A wide variety of textiles are found in boat decoration, from curtains and upholstery to cushions and rugs. But, it’s essential to note that not all textiles are suitable for use in a marine environment. Fabrics such as cotton, wool, or silk are particularly vulnerable to the effects of water and humidity on a boat and will deteriorate quickly. It’s best to opt for synthetic fabrics, such as polyester, nylon, or acrylic, which are more durable, easier to clean, and don’t fade in the sun. You can also opt for waterproof covers to protect cushions or pillows.

2. DON'T THINK ABOUT MOVEMENT

A boat is in constant movement and there may be sea bumps or strong winds, so a very common mistake is to place decorative objects that are not well secured or that are fragile. Vases, photo frames, candles, or glass ornaments can cause accidents, damage furniture, or dirty the floor. Instead, opt for objects made of plastic, metal, or wood that are lightweight and securely attached with adhesives or magnets.

3. THE WORST DECISION: EXCESS

A mistake that can affect the performance and stability of your boat is placing very heavy items, such as massive furniture, thick rugs, or large appliances. These elements can overload the weight of the boat, reduce its speed, and increase its fuel consumption. It’s best to choose lightweight items, such as folding or multifunctional furniture, thin rugs, and compact storage.

4. NOT RESPECTING THE BALANCE

Lighting is a key aspect of creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere on the boat. Poor lighting can make it difficult to see, create shadows, or create a sad, dull atmosphere. The best way is to combine natural light with artificial light, making the most of windows or skylights. You can use translucent or roller blinds and have lamps, spotlights, or LED strips suitable for each area and time of day.

5. A SMALL MISTAKE THAT DAMAGES IT COMPLETELY

Dark colors can give an elegant and sophisticated touch to the boat, but they can also detract from its brightness and spaciousness. Therefore, It’s a mistake to abuse them and be cautious when using them in small or closed spaces, whether on the walls, floor, or furniture. It’s advisable to use light, neutral colors, such as white, beige, or grey, which give a feeling of freshness. You can also use bright and cheerful colors, such as blue, green, or yellow, to give a touch of personality and energy.

6. LEAVE EVERYTHING ON DISPLAY

If you notice that your boat looks cluttered and chaotic, you likely have insufficient or poorly organized storage spaces. This can cause comfort issues and create a feeling of being cramped. The important thing is to choose options that suit your needs, such as drawers or hidden compartments for discreet and tidy storage. Open or hanging shelves to display and easily access the items we want to have at hand. Folding baskets or boxes are for organizing and storing different types of objects. Taking advantage of vertical space, we can use hooks or adhesive hangers, which are ideal for hanging towels, utensils, or accessories.

7. IGNORING STABILITY? BIG MISTAKE!

Safety comes first on a boat, so it’s a mistake to have slippery surfaces on floors or furniture because they can cause falls, bumps, or injuries, especially when the boat is moving or wet. It is essential to have rough or textured surfaces that give you stability and grip at all times. You can use rubber, vinyl, or cork flooring, non-slip base mats, or special outdoor paints.

8. WHEN YOU FORGET THE MOST IMPORTANT THING

The deck is one of the most attractive and enjoyable areas of a boat. A mistake is not taking advantage or neglecting it, which can result in you missing opportunities to relax, enjoy yourself, or take in the scenery. If you don't want your boat to lose its charm and appeal, it’s wise to make the deck comfortable, multifunctional, and practical. You can place outdoor furniture, cushions, blankets, umbrellas, tables, chairs, deckchairs, or sun loungers. You can also add decorative elements such as plants, flowers, candles, or garlands. Turn it into whatever you need.

9. A BORING AND OUTDATED STYLE

Sometimes we get so used to our boat that we don't realize that it is outdated, deteriorated, or boring. That is why it’s necessary to renew the interior design from time to time with the latest trends in boat design and adapt them to your style to give it a new and different air. You don't need to make big changes, with small details such as changing textiles, objects, colors, furniture, or lighting, you can achieve great results. But, you can also make more extensive renovations, such as changing the floor, the walls, or the layout.
